Important university centre and UNESCO heritage site. It is considered the place where Renaissance originated and is universally renowned as one of the cradles of art and architecture. It is also famous for being one of the most beautiful cities in the world thanks to its many monuments and museums – among which the Duomo, Santa Croce Church, the Uffizi gallery, the Ponte Vecchio bridge, Piazza della Signoria square and Palazzo Pitti.
This beautiful village has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. San Gimignano, is more or less intact in its 13th and 14th century aspect, despite some 19th and 20th century renovations, and is one of the best European examples of urban organization at the times of the city states.
This city, famous for the extraction and processing of alabaster, was one of the main city states in ancient Tuscany (Etruria). In Medieval times i was seat of an important episcopal seigniory with jurisdiction on a large part of the Tuscan Hills. Today, it preserves an important historic centre of Etruscan origin, with Roman ruins and medieval buildings, like the Cathedral, the Fortezza Medicea and the Palazzo dei Priori located on the eponymous square which is the nerve centre of the inhabited area of the city.
It is famous for its historic monuments and for the intact 16th century ramparts. It is an outstanding Italian city of art.
Among the most important monuments in this city there is the famous Piazza del Duomo, also called Piazza dei Miracoli, declared World Heritage Site, with the Cathedral built between 1063 and 1118 in a Pisano Romanesque style and the Leaning Tower, a 12th century bell tower, today one of the most renowned Italian monuments in the world because of its characteristic inclination.
